Community Description
Short Description: A bedroom community to Gainesville and 80 miles from Jacksonville, Archer has a long agricultural history of citrus since the 1880s.
Prior to 1850, the town was called Deer Hammock and later Dardens Hammock was located on a 40-acre town site. In 1858, the Florida Town Improvement Company owned by the Florida Railroad Company, that operated between Fernandina and Cedar Key laid out the community. Town resident and former US Senator, David Levy Yulee named Archer after General James T.
