The original county seat was Webberville, north of Marianna. The community was named after Mary and Anna Beveridge, the youngest daughters of the original owners of the site. | | Q. | Hi I Am Searching High And Low Trying To Find Some Family History My Grandfather Was Born In Cypress City, Jackson County Florida His Name Was John Dudley Pittman His Father Was William Calvin And Mother Carlene Cloud I Heard That Our Family Was Big In Agriculture That We Have A Road Named After Us The Pittmans And Still Have Family There Question Is- Is Cypress City Now Marianna? Is There A Road Named Pittman-Or With The Name In It I Thought I Saw Pittman Hill Road Somewhere? Is Jackson County Anywhere Near The Everglades? And If All This Information Is True How Can I Find A Brief History On My Family Without Going Into Genealogy? | | A. | Cypress is a small unincorporated community located between Marianna and Grand Ridge on State Highway 90 in Northwest Florida. If you look on a map, you will see Marianna west of Tallahassee in the Florida panhandle. While it can be argued, that most of Florida south of Orlando is part of the Florida Everglades, the Marianna area is quite different in topography and characteristics. Hopefully, someone reading this wlll be able to enlighten us about the Pittman history of the area. You also may want to contact the Jackson County office by email. Hint: One of the Jackson County Commissioners is J. Milton Pittman. The area is lovely and quite rich in "Old Florida" history. It is worthy of a visit, you would not be disappointed. If you do come for a visit stop by "Two Egg" while you are in the area.
