Community Description
Short Description: Astatula is 27 miles north of Orlando and 72 miles east of Tampa. Founded on the eastern shore of Little Lake Harris as Astabula in 1882, the post office changed the spelling to Astatula in 1894. The first settler was T. A. Hux, who came to the area in 1872. In addition to raising sugar cane, cotton and citrus, Hux also had 1,400 head of cattle. Panthers and alligators were a problem and Hux called open season on gators, selling their teeth as souvenirs. An early ordinance offered a $1 bounty for dead panthers.
Nearby communities include Howey-In-The-Hills (3 miles), Tavares (6 miles), Yalaha (6 miles), Ferndale (7 miles), Tangerine (7.5 miles), Montverde (9 miles), Mount Dora (9 miles) and Minneola (9.5 miles).
