Tavares Inquiry:
| Q. | Was the Pioneer Building the courthouse? And in 1960 where was the Pioneer Building? | | A. | When Lake County became a county in July of 1887, carved out of Orange and Sumter Counties – Tavares became its county seat.
Major St. Clair Abrams, who founded Tavares, borrowed $10,000 and built a courthouse. This courthouse, later known as the Pioneer Building was dedicated in 1889. When the present Courthouse was constructed, the Pioneer Building was moved across the street and demolished in 1975.
| | Q. | Hi, I was wondering if you could help me find a certain event happening in your area? I heard Thomas the Train is coming to Melborne but can't find the information anywhere. Or even if you can direct me where to look on this sight that would help. Thanks for your time. | | A. | Thomas & Friends are presently in Tavares, at Wooton Park on the shores of Lake Dora with the Mount Dora & Lake Eustis Railway. They were there both last weekend and this upcoming weekend, October 15-17 2004 between 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The event includes a 25 minute ride with Thomas, live music, storytelling, imagination station, arts and crafts. For tickets: 866.468.3401 and tickets are $14. We show this as the only Florida stop during 2004 for Thomas.
