Community Description
Short Description: Six miles east of Fort Walton Beach is Destin, known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village". The largest and most elaborately equipped fishing fleet in the State of Florida docks at the Destin Harbor. The 100 Fathom curve draws closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida providing the speediest deep-water access on the Gulf. The offshore shelf dips straight from Destin's East Pass to 100-foot (30m) depths within 10 miles (16 km) -- the speediest deep-water access on the Gulf.
Perched on a narrow strip of land between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Destin was founded by Captain Leonard Destin, who pioneered the snapper fishing industry more than 100 years ago.
The city employs 66 employees with a budget of $15 million dollars.
Local attractions include the Old Destin Post Office Museum, the Destin Fishing Museum, the Destin Fishing Rodeo Building and the restored scenic boat, “Primrose.”
Annual events include the Mayfest, the Destin Seafood Festival, a month-long Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, the weeklong Destin Shark Tournament, Destin Fishing Museum King Mackerel Tournament, Arts and Jazz Festival, Independence Day fireworks display and the Destin Christmas Parade.
Nearby communities include Eglin AFB (7 miles), Lake Lorraine (7.5 miles), Valparaiso (8 miles), Shalimar (8 miles), Miramar Beach (8 miles), Niceville (8.5 miles), Cinco Bayou (9.5 miles) and Ocean City (9.5 miles)
