Community Description
Short Description: Niceville is located 50 miles from Pensacola. Originally named Boggy Bayou after a great peat deposit at the mouth of the Juniper Creek, the US Post Office recognized the City of Boggy in 1893. The operator of the US Post Offices mail boat eventually grew tired of trying to figure out which of the many bayous in the area was "Boggy", so in 1910 the citizens of the town selected the name of Portsmouth. Postal authorities because of its similarity to Portland, 21 miles to the east, rejected the name. The local postmaster suggested the name of Niceville. Some residents were dissatisfied and changed it Valparaiso, or "valley of paradise". Not long after, a gentleman bought a large plot of land one mile from the town and dubbed the new community "New Valparaiso". This caused a lot of confusion and on November 1, 1925, Boggy or Valparaiso was renamed Niceville. In the 1920s, the first ice plant and the first picture show attracted people here from all over the county.
Community events include the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival. Nearby communities include Valparaiso (2 miles), Eglin AFB (7 miles), Destin (8.5 miles), Lake Lorraine (8.5 miles), Shalimar (9 miles), Ocean City (10.5 miles), Cinco Bayou (11.5 miles) and Fort Walton Beach (12 miles).
