Community Description
Short Description: Celebration is south of US-192, adjacent to I-4, 30 minutes from downtown Orlando, 20 minutes from the Orlando International Airport and 10 minutes from all the theme parks. The Celebration Company purchased 160 acres for the new community geared toward the growing 50-plus Baby Boomer market.
The planning for Celebration began in 1987 when The Walt Disney Company decided to develop a master planned community on a portion of the vast acreage it owned near Orlando. The community was built on 4,900 acres and is surrounded by an additional 4,700 acres of permanently protected green space.
The idea for developing the community of Celebration was to recapture the idea of a traditional town, traditional in spirit, but modern in terms of what we know about how are residents like to live. A turn-of-the-century looking houses build closer together, garages behind the house, and alleyways to access them making this town a very close nit family. Celebration is the first attempt at new urbanism. It is a planned community, a village built from the ground up. The project was given birth in 1994 in Central Florida, on the border of Disney's Walt Disney World property. Disney wanted to take the best ideas from the most successful towns of yesterday and today and adapt them for a community of the future.
Downtown Celebration's district is a lively mix of retail shops, restaurants, offices and apartments, town hall, post office, grocery store, and cinema. Several of these buildings situated along a wide promenade circling the lake in the center of town. Boat rentals, a park and a pedestrian mall are at hand.
The town's government consists of a council with both members of the owner's association and the Celebration Company. The council is designed in such a fashion that the Celebration Company has final say on any and all decisions.
