Community Description
Short Description: Boynton Beach was named for Major Nathan S. Boynton, a Civil War officer and former mayor of Port Huron, Michigan. He purchased a tract of land here in 1896 and later built a resort hotel along with his home. Initially called simply "Boynton," in 1925 the city's name was changed to Boynton Beach.
Boynton Beach Inlet connects the Intracoastal Waterway and Lake Worth with the Atlantic Ocean. Located between Delray Beach and West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach is in the heart of Florida's Gold Coast.
Knollwood Groves, a popular attraction, lets visitors discover Native American life and see how a booming citrus market during the early part of the century helped carve cities out of the Everglades. The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to learn about endangered animal and plant life native to South Florida.
The city has many historic buildings in the downtown area, several of which were constructed with wood from a Norwegian barkentine ship, the Coquimbo, which sank off the Boynton Beach coast in 1909.
