Community Description
Short Description: Lawtey is 30 miles from Gainesville and 30 miles from Jacksonville. The city was established in 1877 by a colony of 20 people from Chicago, Illinois. The leader of the group was a Colonel V.J. Shipman, who had a son-in-law, William Lawtey, after whom the city was named. A Captain Burrin donated 200 acres for a town, with the stipulation that the proceeds of the sale of lots should be used for church and school purposes.
