Community History:
In 1960, developer Norman Johnson and others purchased some land to construct a group of residences called Sunset Golf Homes. To attract people, an upside down house was constructed. Once people saw the upside down house, they took note of the area and its potential. Homes and businesses rapidly grew in number in the newly incorporated "Sunrise Golf Village," and growth has continued steadily over the years. In 1967, the government emerged from developers control as the City of Sunrise, operated by its residents through elected officials. In July 1988, a referendum (a vote of the people) was held that led to a change in the form of government from council-strong mayor to council-manager.
