Community Description
Short Description: Havana, "North Florida's Arts and Antiques Capital” is 15 miles north of Tallahassee. Twenty years ago the community was slowly dying, today over 30 shops and galleries have pumped new life into its many old tobacco warehouses. US-27 runs from Tallahassee to Georgia.
A local schoolteacher, James Mathewson, proposed the town name.
Cultivation of Cuban tobacco in the county began as early as 1829. The hand-wrapped cigars that were made here were like the ones made in Havana, Cuba. The Spanish mission of Santa Cruz de Cupali stood near here. At the time of its incorporation Shade tobacco, used in fine cigars, was the major crop in the area.
On a Thursday evening, March 16, 1916, much of the business portion of the town was destroyed by fire. Twenty-five buildings were burned, leaving only two stores.
The Town is a full service community, with electric, natural gas, water, and sewer distribution systems, police, fire, recreation, and public works.
Community events include the three-day Havana MusicFest held each April.
Nearby communities include Midway (9.5 miles), Attapulgus, GA (10 miles), Quincy (12 miles), Tallahassee (15.5 miles) and Gretna (17 miles).
