Community Description
Short Description: Port St. Joe, 80 miles from Tallahassee is the largest city and the county seat of Gulf County. This coastal deep-water port community is known as the “Constitution City.” The site of Florida's first Constitution Convention, the first town established here, known as St. Joseph, was the scene of the convention where Florida's first constitution was written in 1838. This document was the basis of Florida's government until the Civil War. St Joseph was destroyed by a yellow fever epidemic in 1841. The City of Port St. Joe, named for the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, was built on the former site of St. Joseph.
Highland View, a sleepy little fishing community bordered by Highway 98 and the St. Joe Canal lies just northwest of Port St. Joe and White City lies just northeast of Port St Joe and the White City Bridge on Highway 71 overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. The bay community of Simmons Bayou: Located on C-30 is the gateway to Gulf County's famous bay scallops.
Local attractions include the beach at St. Joseph State Park with beach combing, walking, shelling, swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, golfing and in-season, scalloping.
