Brooksville, Hernando County

Community Description

Short Description:

Brooksville, the county seat of Hernando County is an hour away from Tampa with Highways 41, 98 and 50 connecting it to I-75 is the county seat of Hernando County. Brooksville, one of the two incorporated cities in Hernando County is known as the Southern Bell of Hernando County. This community is named for Preston Brooks, a former congressman of South Carolina. The community is known for limestone quarrying, cement production, and forest and dairy products.

During the Civil War history when Union troops began blockading the Gulf Coast, Brooksville became a strategic location for supplying cattle, hogs, salt and foodstuffs to confederate troops as far north as Virginia. Blockage runners became so adept and successful; a militia was formed under the command of Captain LeRoy Lesley to defend the runners from the augmenting Federal military presence developing around Bay Port.  Toward the end of the war, Union forces plundered everything in a 40-mile radius of the Bay Port area, and a special convoy of 250 troops under the command of Captain J.W. Childs marched from the Anclote River to Brooksville.

Community events include the Brooksville Raid Festival, Civil War reenactment of the July 1864 Union attack on Brooksville held each January, the Hernando County Fair, a Labor Day picnic in the park, Arbor Day festivities and a Christmas Festival.

Local attractions include the Rogers Christmas House, the Hernando Heritage Museum and the Good Neighbor Rail Trail.

Nearby communities include Hill 'n Dale (7 miles), Brookridge (7 miles), Spring Lake (7 miles), Masaryktown (9 miles), High Point, FL (9.5 miles) and Spring Hill, FL (12 miles).

Brooksville Inquiry:

Q.Is there an attraction called Butterfly Gardens in Brooksville?
A.Butterfly Garden Tours in Brooksville can be reached at: 352.796.3501.
Q.Was Brooksville hit? I am interested in a trailer park on route 44.(just outside of brooksville)
A.The City of Brooksville and all of Hernando County escaped with far less damage from Hurricane Jeanne than when Frances came through over the Labor Day weekend. Residents living along the banks of the Withlacoochee River can expect flooding since the river is not expected to crest until October 10th.
