Community Description
Short Description: The Town of Windermere is 14 miles southwest of Orlando, six miles southeast of Winter Garden, two miles south of Ocoee, six miles north of Walt Disney World and 70 miles east of Tampa. The community name came from Dr. Stanley Scott, whose father purchased 160 acres in 1885. Dr. Scott built his home on the shore of Lake Butler, and it is believed by many that he named this town after England's famous Lake Windermere.
Sand bottom lakes surround Windermere. Lake Butler the largest at 1,600 acres, on the west, Lake Down on the east, and Lake Bessie on the southeast. Since 1910, a system of canals, Butler, Down and six other lakes including 1,200 acre Lake Tibet are connected to form what is known as the Butler Chain creating an "island village among the lakes." The state protects the 4,500-acre chain under the designation of an "outstanding Florida Waterway”.
Much of Windermere's downtown area is historically preserved. Overlooking Lake Butler is the renowned Isleworth community that counts among its residents.
Windermere is almost completely surrounded by the Butler Chain of Lakes. There are nine separate parks in the city, providing several recreational amenities. The majority of the streets in the city are sand.
Community events include a Christmas social, Easter parade and egg hunt, July 4th pancake breakfast, Fun Festival and a Halloween costume parade.
Nearby communities include Gotha (2.5 miles), Bay Hill (3.5 miles), Doctor Phillips (4 miles), Ocoee (5.5 miles), Tildenville (5.5 miles), Winter Garden (5.5 miles) and Orlovista (6 miles).
