Community Description
Short Description: Belleair is located on SR-697 near Clearwater Harbor on the Pinellas Peninsula. Route 60 a few miles north crosses over the Courtney Campbell Causeway, leading into downtown Tampa. Belleair is home to the Belleview Biltmore Hotel, one of the world's largest wooden structures built in 1897 and listed on the National Historical Registry.
Henry B. Plant gave the name of the town in 1896. At that time, he purchased most of the land now included in the town and built his Belleview Hotel. The town is a result of this hotel, started in 1895. The Belleview Biltmore Hotel is still located in the town. It is one of the largest wooden structures in the world that is in use. The town is two square miles in total area and has three full-sized golf courses.
In 1924, several prominent citizens and hotel guests incorporated the Town of Belleair in order to prevent annexation into the neighboring town of Clearwater. Subdivision improvements ceased in the late twenties, along with grand plans for a casino, yacht club, country club, marina, etc, when Belleair experienced financial problems along with the rest of the nation. In 1945, Mr. Ernest Hallett picked up where the prosperity of the twenties left off when he purchased approximately half of the town, the area at the south end known as Belleair Estates.
