Lakeland, Polk County

Community Description

Short Description:

The "World Citrus Center", Lakeland, the largest city in Polk County is located near the exact geographic center of Florida 40 miles east of Orlando and 30 miles west of Tampa. Lakeland, named from the City's 38 named lakes located in the community, was almost named Munnville for its founder Abraham Godwin Munn. The Polk Walkway passes through the southern half of Lakeland and I-4 is along the northern part of Lakeland.

Lakeland, often misspelled, as Lake Land is the home of Florida Southern College, home to the largest one-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural structures. Tourists from around the world come to marvel at the 12-structure collection of Wright's work. Lakeland is also home to Southeastern College and branches of Polk Community College and the University of South Florida. Lakeland is home of the Lakeland Tigers baseball team and the spring training camp for the Detroit Tigers.

The annual budget of the city is $590 million with 2,224 city employees. The city's electric utility supplies an area of 258 square miles.

Local attractions include the Florida Southern College campus with its "Child of the Sun" Frank Lloyd Wright collection, the 1928 Lake Mirror Promenade, Polk Museum of Art, Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Munn Park, Hollis Garden, Lakeland Center, the 1927 Polk Theatre, USA International Speedway, Lakeland Tigers baseball team, Explorations V Children's Museum, the Pied Piper Players and the Lakeland Downtown District.

Community events include Sun 'n Fun Aviation "fly in" convention, Mayfaire-by-the-Lake Art festival, Arts on the Park, the annual Florida Southern College Festival of Fine Arts, the Orange Cup Regatta, and the Florida Dance Theatre.

Nearby communities include Crystal Lake (3.5 miles), Medulla (5.5 miles), Kathleen (7 miles), Fussels Corner (7.5 miles) and Auburndale (9.5 miles).

Lakeland Inquiry:

Q.I'm having difficulty determining if I am paying the correct property taxes or rate on my home. I purchased it for $131,000 in 2004 and filed for the homestead exemption of $25,000.

What is Mulberry's tax rate and what amount should I be paying on $105,000?

What tax rate does Tampa have?  Thank you.
A.

The tax rate for the City of Mulberry is approximately 8.5 mills for every thousand dollars of valuation, over the first $25,000 of property valuation, which is exempt from taxation for a Florida "homestead" property. For $105,000 in valuation this could be estimated to be: $105 x 8.5= $892.50. (Remember this is only city tax rates. You will need to add the school district , the county and any other local taxes which might be due to get an accurate total tax picture). The tax rate for Tampa is approximately 6.54 mills per $1,000 of valuation. Hope this is helpful.

Q.Was Lakeland hit very hard by hurricane Jeanne ?
A.Lakeland and all of Polk County were hit hard by Charley which came through in August, Frances who entered on the Labor Day weekend and finally by Hurricane Jeanne in late September. Ironically, Hurricane Jeanne may have topped Hurricane Charley as the most costly natural disaster to hit Polk County.  A survey of 30 percent of the county showed that 12,000 structures sustained damage in Jeanne. Numerous structures in Lakeland still have not been inspected.
