Short Description: Welaka is located 48 miles east of Gainesville and 58 miles south of Jacksonville.
The town is on the St. Johns River, which the Seminoles called Ylaco or Walaka. A combination of Indian words meaning, "tide" or "intermittent springs." Another interpretation given the word is "river of lakes," which is most applicable to the St. Johns.
Local attractions include the Welaka Maritime Museum, Welaka State Forest, Mt Royal Indian Temple Mound and the Welaka National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium.
Nearby communities include Pomona Park (5 miles), Crescent City (11.5 miles), Palatka (11.5 miles), East Palatka (12.5 miles), Interlachen (18 miles), Hastings (19.5 miles), Pierson (22 miles) and Astor (24 miles).
