Community Description
Short Description: Pace is a suburb of Pensacola, less than one mile north of the Gulf of Mexico, 107 miles from Tallahassee and in close proximity of several armed forces bases. The Greater Pace area includes the communities of Floridatown, Pea Ridge, Wallace, Harp and Mulat.
Local attractions include four golf courses within 10 miles, several thousand acres of State Recreation land, two major rivers, the Escambia and the Black Water with swimming, hiking, boating, fishing.
E. F. Skinner came to Florida in the spring of 1874 and bought a large amount of timberland and the lumber mill at Gull Point in Escambia County. A hurricane devastated the Skinner mill and James G. Pace from Hazelhurst, Georgia, purchased what was left of Skinner's Operation including approximately 100,000 acres of timber, and Skinner went west. James G. Pace then re-built the mill in what today is the community of Pace. The sawmill operated its own narrow-gauge railroad for logging. The track ran through Santa Rosa County from Floridatown to Jay. The engines and cars were brought to Floridatown by "Barge" since the railroad did not connect with any other line. The area was called Pea Ridge in the 1910 census but by 1912 it was known as PACE. The sawmill provided employment for over 200 men from 1907-1927.
Nearby communities include Ferry Pass (6.5 miles), Milton (7.5 miles), Bagdad (8 miles), Gonzalez (9.5 miles), Ensley (9.5 miles), Brent (10 miles), Pensacola (11.5 miles) and Goulding (12 miles).
