Community Description
Short Description: Bushnell, the county seat of Sumter County is 32 miles from Spring Hill and just over 50 miles from Tampa. The community was named in honor of J.W. Bushnell, who surveyed the route of the Florida Railway and Navigation Company Railroad and brought the railroad to the community. First settled in the 1870s, Bushnell derived its name on October 28, 1885 after the establishment of the post office.
Local attractions include the Dade Battlefield Historical Site, immediately south of Bushnell, marks the site of the infamous Dade Massacre, which occurred December 28, 1835, and sparked the Second Seminole Indian War.
Community events include the "Annual Fall Festival". Nearby communities include Webster (5.5 miles), Center Hill (8 miles), Lake Panasoffkee (9 miles), Coleman (9 miles), Ridge Manor (12.5 miles), Floral City (13.5 miles), Lacoochee (14.5 miles) and Wildwood (14.5 miles).
