With a labor force of 53,274 the major private sector employer in Charlotte County is the Publix Supermarkets with 1,600 employees and St. Joseph's Hospital with 1,450 employees. | Q. | We are looking at renting a cottage on Gasparilla Island for a week at Christmas. Cars are not allowed on the island and access is by water taxi. Can you advise if there is a way of getting from Ft. Meyers to the island without having to rent a car, as it would sit for an entire week without use? We’re coming from Canada and can get a West jet flight into Ft. Meyers. Thank you in advance. Bill | | A. | You must be going to the bridgeless Little Gasparilla barrier island north of Gasparilla (Boca Grande), about 40 miles northwest of Fort Myers. Both islands are part of the chain that includes Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva, Pine Island, Cabbage Key, Useppa and Cayo Costa. The Port Authority does regulate the taxi rates from the Southwest Florida International Airport to “zones” around Fort Myers. To get you to Little Gasparilla, we spoke with Jessi L. Pasternak of the Englewood-Cape Haze Area Chamber. Jessi suggested one of the following options: Boca Boats (888.416.2628), Nature Cruises (941.475.3168) or Island Adventures Boat Tours (941.408.5138) all from Gasparilla vicinity that rent to private parties and should be able to pick up in Fort Myers area and take you to Little Gasparilla. Jessi also suggested as another option Blue Sky Airport Limo Service (941.484.9796) offers a shuttle to Placida area. The water-taxi ride from Placida to Little Gasparilla is just a 10-minute trip.

This bustling waterfront Mall, Resort and Marina has "reinvented" itself with beautiful new key west colors, completely renovated villa vacation rentals and the Marina is undergoing a 3 million dollar renovation, expected to be completed by October, 2006.
