| | Q. | We love going through the Dora canal. How can I find out about the history of the canal? Thanks | | A. | The 1.25-mile, tree-canopy lined Dora Canal connects Lake Dora on the south to Lake Eustis on the north. The canal was originally named the Elfin River and provides a nice shady place for the local bird population, especially the Little Blue and Great Blue Herons. Water flows north through the Dora Canal to Lake Eustis and eventually to the Oklawaha River. In Lake Dora is Palm Island Park, home to Lighthouse Point, the only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida. Sportswriter Grantland Rice described the Dora Canal as the "most beautiful mile of water in the world." Portions of the Humphrey Bogart classic "African Queen" and the Tarzan movies of the 30's and 40's were filmed along the giant Cypress trees lined canal banks. For more local information about the canal contact Historic Mount Dora by Email.
