Community Description
Short Description: Hawthorne is 18 miles from Gainesville and 58 miles from Jacksonville at the crossroads of State Road 20 and US Highway 301. The community evolved from a tiny settlement established around 1840. In 1880 the town was named "Hawthorn" in honor of James M. Hawthorn, a two fisted Indian fighter who encouraged the growth of the town by giving the railroad land to run its line west of Johnson Lake. The community finally gave into the final “e” misspelling as the official name in 1950, but the post office is spelled without the final "e".
Local attractions include the Hawthorne Historical Museum and Cultural Center and the 14-mile Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail along the Paynes Prairie State Preserve.
Nearby communities include Interlachen (13.5 miles), McIntosh (13.5 miles), Keystone Heights (14 miles), Micanopy (14.5 miles), Waldo (15 miles), Reddick (17 miles), Gainesville (18 miles) and Hampton (19 miles).
