Community Description
Short Description: Minneola is located in rolling hills and lakes of Central Florida, near major attractions, 25 miles from Orlando and 65 miles from Tampa.
A settlement was established here in 1870 by William A. Smith, but was given no name. In 1882, George W. Hull, a Canadian by birth, came here from Duluth, Minnesota. He made a survey and map of the town and, at the instigation of his wife, gave it the name of Minneola, a name which is found in several states and is a Dakota Indian word meaning "many waters." The Hulls also applied the name to the local lake. Minneola was originally in Sumter County, until the boundary was moved.
Minneola is predominately a farming and bedroom community for the Orlando metropolitan area with a much greater nighttime population than during the daytime.
Nearby communities include Clermont (2 miles), Ferndale (4 miles), Montverde (5 miles), Groveland (7.5 miles), Oakland (8 miles), Astatula (9.5 miles), Mascotte (9.5 miles) and Howey-in-the-Hills (9.5 miles).
