Tallahassee, Leon County

Community Description

Short Description:

Tallahassee is the capital of Florida, the county seat and the only incorporated city in Leon County. The community is 25 miles from the Gulf, 15 miles from the Georgia border and 180 miles west of Jacksonville. Tallahassee is located in an area known as the Big Bend, straddling the foothills of the Appalachians.

Tallahassee was established following a decision by the legislature to locate the capital of the new Florida Territory midway between the original largest cities of St Augustine and Pensacola. Tallahassee, the name is derived from a Muskogee word meaning "old town."

Tallahassee is the home of Florida A&M University and Florida State University, home of the Seminoles and one of the largest universities in the state. The original inhabitants of Tallahassee were the Apalachee Indians. During the 17th century, the Spanish and Apalachee Indians occupied the area as a government and religious headquarters.

Local attractions include the Leon County Civic Center, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Antique Car Museum, the Capitol building and the Old Capitol Museum, the De Soto State Archeological site, the Governors mansion, the Maclay State Gardens, the Goodwood Plantation and the Museum of Florida History.

Nearby communities include Woodville (10 miles), Midway (13.5 miles), Havana (15.5 miles), St. Marks (20.5 miles), Quincy (23.5 miles), Monticello (28.5 miles) and Gretna (29 miles).

Tallahassee Inquiry:

Q.I have always been interested in native indian cultures. Are there any parks, museums or festivals in NWFL to visit?
A.Absolutely! Here are a couple NW Florida starting points...right in our State Capital area, Tallahassee which is derived from a Creek Indian word meaning "old town."

First check out the Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park, 3600 Indian Mounds Rd, located off US-27, two miles north of I-10 in Tallahassee.

Second, the Tallahassee Museum Of History and Natural Science, 3945 Museum Drive also in Tallahassee.

Want more? Search http://FloridaView.com for Indian and you will find many more to chose from....Enjoy!

Q.I'm interesting in taking my family to a park  or event(s)on July 4th, 2004.  Which park (s) will have activites to celebrate the 4th of July?  Where is it/they located and is there a fee to enter?  Are foods available to bring or will there be food vendors.  Any close by hotels near the parks.
