Madison, Madison County

Community Description

Short Description:

Madison, the county seat of Madison County is 58 miles from Tallahassee and 120 miles from Jacksonville. The community was established May 2, 1838. This city was first called Hickstown, after the Seminole Indian Chief John Hicks. Later, it was known as Newton. But, mail kept arriving addressed to Madison C.H., meaning the Court House of Madison County. After the Civil War, the "C.H." was dropped and the "Madison" was retained.

Local attractions include the Spanish mission of Santa Helens de Machaba, Four Freedoms Park with the Four Freedom monument, the mercantile museum at TJ Beggs & Co, Elmer's Genealogy Library and North Florida Community College with the Wardlaw-Smith-Goza Mansion/Conference Center, the Ellaville Post Office, the oldest house in town, still occupied, was built in 1849, the small wooden 1843 Episcopal church and Ladell Brothers Outdoor Environmental Center.

Natural attractions include Lake Francis a few blocks southeast of the courthouse and Cherry Lake. Three pristine rivers form the eastern and western boundaries of Madison County, the Suwannee, Withlacochee, and Aucilla. Twin Rivers State Park provides excellent trails for hiking and riding horses.

Community events include Down Home Days held in mid-April every year.

Nearby communities include Lee (8.5 miles), Greenville (15 miles), Jennings (23.5 miles) and Perry (27 miles).
