Frostproof is 35 miles from Lakeland and 65 miles from Tampa and Orlando. Named by northerners who enjoyed the climate, Frostproof, located 14 miles south of Lake Wales, fronts two large lakes, Reedy and Clinch. The Frostproof area is the expanse of the U.S. Air Force's Avon Park Gunnery and Bombing Range, which is a popular spot for camping and hunting. Fishing is a very popular past time as well, with the area featuring some of the top bass waters in the United States.
After the great freeze of 1896-1897, the community enveloped with 10 nearby lakes changed its name from Lake Mont to Frostproof. Cowboys from the cattle regions just north of Frostproof would herd their cattle southward into this highland lake region during the winter months and noted the absence of frost in the coldest seasons.
