Community Description
Short Description: Isaac W. Barwick was 25 when he relocated from Georgia and set up a lumbering operation in the Wildwood area in 1877. The Lee family of Leesburg opened canals and waterways which made it possible to transport their products all the way to Bug Springs, a large spring near Okahumpka. In 1882, the Tropical Florida Railroad Company extended south from Ocala to Wildwood. The city was named long before there was any town. A telegraph construction engineer ran out of wire at this point and so notified his headquarters, heading his dispatch as "Wildwood." In the early years of this century the city hall was an eight-sided building called the Wigwam.

| | A. | I am certain there is nothing to worry about, FloridaView staff drove thru the Wildwood area today and saw no significant damage. Sumter County (Wildwood)was not as affected by Charley as was nearby Lake and Polk Counties. There are a few individual power and phone outages in some areas and they are being addressed quickly by Florida and Georgia utilities.
