Community Description
Short Description: Perry, "the Tree Capital of the South," is the county seat of Taylor County and the only incorporated city in the county. The community is situated in the geographic center of the county, 51 miles southeast of Tallahassee, 90 miles west of Gainesville and 120 miles west of Jacksonville.
Perry was first named Rosehead by early Native Americans who resided in the area because of the abundance of wild rose bushes. In 1875 it was changed to Perrytown after General Edward A. Perry, who was governor of Florida, 1885-1889. The "town" was later dropped and the name became Perry.
Community events include the annual Black (Florida) Forest Festival, held each October featuring the annual canoe trip down the Steinhatchee River, the antique car show & gas light parade, the king tree parade and bed race around the court house square and an annual Bluegrass Festival.
Local attractions include the State Forest Capital Museum in with an original “Cracker Homestead.”
