Community Description
Short Description: Sopchoppy is 31 miles from Tallahassee and 200 miles from Jacksonville. Established in 1853, the city's name is a Creek Indian name meaning "dark or black water." Another interpretation says the name comes from the Creek words "sokhe" (twisted) and "chapke" (long). The name is derived from the dark waters of the Sopchoppy River that flow in a twisting pattern through the town. In 1893, the Georgia, Florida and Alabama railroad built a spur line through Sopchoppy.
Nearby communities include Carrabelle (18.5 miles), St. Marks (20.5 miles), Woodville (23.5 miles), Midway, (30 miles), Tallahassee (31 miles), Eastpoint (34.5 miles), Quincy (37 miles) and Greensboro (39 miles).
