Newberry Inquiry:
| Q. | please advise if Newberry, Fl was affected by hurricane Katrina. | | A. | Newberry was a very long ways from any impact of Katrina. I do know a number of their civic organizations traveled to Louisiana and Mississippi to assist in the cleanup issues from the devastation of Katrina.
| | Q. | I'd like information on the watermelon festival coming up this weekend. I'd like to know price of tickets for admission, times of events and parking info. I also need directions from Citrus county..thank you | | A. | This is the 60th year for the Newberry Watermelons Festival which became a revenue crop during the Second World War. The first watermelon festival was held in 1946. A major feature of the Festival is the parade held on Saturday with arts and crafts, rodeo, BBQ, street dance, and of course the "Watermelon Queen."
The festival this year is being held at the Canterbury Equestrian Showplace, 23100 W Newberry Road. Newberry is west of Gainesville. The quickest way from Citrus County is to take SR-45 (US-41) north from Inverness past Williston where it joins with US-27. Continue north into Alachua County past Archer and you will soon be in Newberry. When you cross SR-26 (Newberry Rd), head east to the event site. There is plenty of parking and events begin at 9 AM (8 AM for the 5K) and last most of the day.
