Community Description
Short Description: Mayo, the county seat and only city in Lafayette County is 65 miles from Gainesville and 105 miles from Jacksonville.
The town was established in 1874 by John B. Whitfield and is named after James Mayo, a colonel who had been in charge of the Confederate Army. He delivered a speech in the area one Fourth of July and the settlers were so impressed by Mayo that they named their community after him.
Nearby communities include Branford (18 miles), Live Oak (21 miles), Lee (27 miles), Perry (28 miles), Cross City (29 miles), Bell (30 miles), Fort White (33 miles) and Madison (33 miles).
