Community Description
Short Description: Located in the western part of Union County near the Columbia County line and Olustee Creek that divides the counties. The small agricultural village of Providence is considered by some to be the second oldest settlement in the country, second only to St. Augustine, as a stopover for travelers heading west.
The village became the county seat of Columbia, Bradford, and Union Counties and a regional trading post with drug stores, mercantile stores, blacksmith shops, and other businesses. Not much of this early Florida history remains in Providence or of this historic Bellamy Trail site.
Each autumn, the small community hosts a festival commemorating pioneer traditions, skills, foods, and products of bygone eras. Among the many booths and activities include arts and crafts, collectibles, a living pioneer village, a Civil War reenactment, Creek Indian campsite, cane grinding, soap making, cakewalk, turkey shoot and auction.
