Lake County Inquiry:

Q.Which is the oldest building in Groveland, Lake County?
A.

You can contact the Lake County Historical Society and they should be able to give you the most accurate information on Groveland's historic buildings at lakehistory1887@cs.com or by phone at 407.343.9600.

Q.Was the Pioneer Building the courthouse? And in 1960 where was the Pioneer Building?
A.
When Lake County became a county in July of 1887, carved out of Orange and Sumter Counties – Tavares became its county seat.

Major St. Clair Abrams, who founded Tavares, borrowed $10,000 and built a courthouse. This courthouse, later known as the Pioneer Building was dedicated in 1889. When the present Courthouse was constructed, the Pioneer Building was moved across the street and demolished in 1975.

Q.I just wanted to know where there are places to play bingo?   Thank you.
A.You might try Leesburg Bingo located at 31710 Progress Road. Phone number is 352.728.7721.
Q.When is the annual arts & crafts festival in Mt. Dora, FL?
A.Held each year on the fourth weekend in October (10/28-10/29, 2006), the Craft Fair is a nationally ranked juried event attracting over 250,000 visitors and over 350 of the best crafters in the country. The event is held downtown on Fourth Avenue in Mount Dora (352.735.1191; 352.383.2165; Email Contact).
Q.I need to know what counties/cities are within a 45 mile radius of The Villages, FL.  I've tried just about everything I can think of to get this info online - and have come up with nothing useful. Please !! :)
A.

FloridaView is all you need to try when it comes to Florida information. The Villages extend into three neighboring counties so there are a number of communities that surround this central Florida development. Lady Lake, Fruitland Park, Leesburg, Wildwood and Weirsdale, are all well within your 45 mile radius. The Villages also has all of the amenities you would associate with a city. It features a radio station, schools, newspaper, hospital and numerous retail and service stores as well.

Q.We love going through the Dora canal. How can I find out about the history of the canal?
Thanks
A.The 1.25-mile, tree-canopy lined Dora Canal connects Lake Dora on the south to Lake Eustis on the north. The canal was originally named the Elfin River and provides a nice shady place for the local bird population, especially the Little Blue and Great Blue Herons. Water flows north through the Dora Canal to Lake Eustis and eventually to the Oklawaha River. In Lake Dora is Palm Island Park, home to Lighthouse Point, the only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida. Sportswriter Grantland Rice described the Dora Canal as the "most beautiful mile of water in the world." Portions of the Humphrey Bogart classic "African Queen" and the Tarzan movies of the 30's and 40's were filmed along the giant Cypress trees lined canal banks. For more local information about the canal contact Historic Mount Dora by Email.
Q.Looking for the website of the new retirement community "The Village" having 2 Town Squares.
A.The 40,000-resident self-sufficient community that sprawls into Marion, Lake and Sumter Counties known as The Villages is complete with site-built homes, entertainment and shopping facilities, its own newspaper and television station, and a hospital and yes, two old-fashioned town squares, Spanish Springs and Lake Sumter Landing Market Square.
Q.is there a pumkin patch anywhere in lake county? if so i am located in tavares, where is the closest? thank you!
A.As the Fall Events unfold, there will be pumpkins emerging from unsuspecting patches. The Lake County location we know is Trinity Evangelical Free Church at 890 Abrams Road in Eustis, 352.589.5673. The Pumpkins will be arriving at their patch on Saturday, October 1st at 9 AM. Other regional locations include the Pumpkin Patch at Aloma United Methodist Church, 3045 Aloma Avenue in Winter Park, 407.671.2180, beginning next week and at Tuskawilla United Methodist Church, 3925 Red Bug Lake Road, 407.699.8155 in Casselberry beginning October 8th. Also the St. John Lutheran Church, 1600 S Orange Ave, 407.898.6292 in Winter Park will be having a Pumpkin Patch Party on October 23rd.
Q.We are looking for accomodations over the Christmas holiday that will take a beautiful well behaved golden retriever dog. 2 adults 1 bedroom plus bath.  Is there anything in Haciendas - that was recommended by a friend. Thank you
A.
We spoke with Betty Bernard, the Executive Director of the Lady Lake Chamber of Commerce and she had several good suggestions for your Golden Retriever's visit to Central Florida.

Q.We just moved to Fruitland Park and wondered if there is a gourmet meat market and/or seafood market in the area?  All we've seen so far is Publix, etc. Thanks!
A.
The nearest specialty market would be the 5th Avenue Café & Market 25 miles east of Fruitland Park on E 5th Avenue in Mount Dora. 352.383.0090. In Inverness, 25 miles west of your location is Jerry's Meat Market & Deli at 5164 S Florida Avenue, 352.726.2203. Clermont in South Lake County has a Caribbean Market on Bowman Street off SR-50, 352.243.7794. Outside of these, Orlando has 3-4 general meat markets from which to choose.
